What Counts as a Viewer on Twitch (Live Count, Average and Peak)

When someone says "I had 50 viewers", they might mean four different things. Knowing the difference helps you read your stats and set realistic goals.

The four numbers

Live viewer count. The number shown under your stream while you are live. It changes every few seconds as people join and leave.

Average concurrent viewers. The live count averaged over time. This is the number programs like Affiliate and Partner look at, because it reflects steady attendance.

Peak viewers. The highest live count reached in a stream. One raid can set a peak that your average will never match.

Unique viewers. The number of different people who watched in a period. It is always higher than the live count.

Where to find them

Why the numbers differ

A stream can have 200 unique viewers during the day and a live count that never goes above 15, because people drop in and leave. For discovery, the live count in your category matters most, since the list is sorted by it.

How to read your stats

Why the live count matters

Viewers decide quickly whether to open a stream. A channel with a few people in chat looks more welcoming than an empty one. That is why many streamers pay attention to the live count from the first minutes.
